Is massage or PEMF better for my horse?
Yes.
Okay, I know that’s not a real answer.
To really understand which is better for your horse, let’s dive into the benefits, limitations, and best use-cases for massage and PEMF as holistic modalities👇
Massage
Benefits: Massage is a true hands-on manipulation of the tissue. It can involve a variety of techniques such as effleurage, tapotement, percussion, compression, trigger points, and stretching. The goal of massage is to create a suppleness in the muscle tissue and fascia for an improved range of motion, function, and balance. It can also create mental calmness, helping horses stay relaxed and focused.
Limitations: While massage can help with sore or restricted muscles, it is limited to muscles we can reach (unable to target deep muscles) and can take multiple sessions in order to see a difference. It can sometimes be challenging to see a difference with massage when there are other inhibiting factors as play such as poor saddle fit, bad nutrition, the wrong training program, or being in need of dental work.
Works well for: Compensatory patterns, injury rehab, horses in training or those using their bodies in new ways (cross training, etc.), and horses adjusting to lifestyle changes.
PEMF
Benefits: PEMF stimulates cellular exercise to kick-start the body’s systems into doing what they do best. It gives the body the energy it needs to perform its duties more effectively and efficiently, making it extremely beneficial for wound healing and decreasing swelling and pain in conditions like arthritis or soft tissue injuries.
Limitations: Cannot break apart tissue (e.g. work out “knots”), some horses are made nervous by it.
Works well for: Chronic conditions like arthritis, tendon injuries, or general inflammation. Ideal for horses needing systemic support or those with deep-tissue issues that massage can’t reach.
The Best Approach? Both!
Massage and PEMF both shine in different scenarios and can work together beautifully.
By understanding the strengths and limitations of both, you can make informed choices to keep your horse happy, healthy, and ready to perform!
