Quarterly tasks for equine business owners

Being a good therapist and a good business owner are not the same.

You can be the most competent bodyworker in the industry… but if you don’t have sound business practices, it’s unlikely that you’ll make it past your 3rd business anniversary 🥲

So many of us start in this industry because we love horses. We love helping. We love healing.

Do we love collecting payments and analyzing profit and loss statements? Maybe not so much…

There are so many components to running a professional, sustainable, fun business but one of the things I discuss in virtually every coaching call and cohort of the Barrio Business Blueprint is: systems.

You have to have a plan for running your business or it will run you. There are endless tendrils of the “systems” web that we could discuss but what I want to focus on this month is your system of checks and balances.

How often are you checking the pulse on your business health? There should be tasks that you are doing weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annually to make sure that your business is healthy.

We’re at the end of the first quarter of the year, so I’m sharing my (not-so-secret) list of non-negotiable quarterly tasks:

  1. Review finances (read through profit + loss, look at expenses, review pricing structure, pay your estimated taxes)

  2. Analyze your online presence with fresh eyes (do a website + social media check - links working?, assess the look, feel, consistency of your social media, respond to Google/Facebook reviews, etc.)

  3. Look back on services (what services are you actually booking consistently?, what services aren’t working?)

  4. Policy assessment (are there any “thorn” policies that you’re not actually upholding?, any challenging clients that need a policy refresh?, recurring issues that need a new policy implemented?)

  5. Marketing review (analyze: where are your clients coming from and how can you nurture that stream?)

  6. Analyze your systems (what are you constantly forgetting to do? what feels hardest the last 3 months? how can you change it?)

If this list makes you feel sweaty, you’re not alone 😅 When you’ve never practiced doing these things, they can feel daunting!

But they don’t have to! I’m here to help if you need me.

Whether you just have a few questions (Um, what’s a profit + loss statement? How do I uphold my policies!?) or you’ve got a whole list - I’m here to help in a judgement-free zone.
